In der Gesundheitsstation in Kosike

Enabling people to receive medical care

The Ugandan district of Amudat in the northeastern region of Karamoja is in desolate condition. Here, people have an extremely low life expectancy, very high levels of acute malnutrition and HIV infection rate. More than one in two people have no access to clean drinking water. Medical care is makeshift. Sign of Hope helps in the village of Kosike by the construction and operation of a health centre.

Activities

This is what we have achieved:

  • Identification of a site and its development/fencing
  • Establishment of initial buildings (kitchen/storage, latrines, gatekeeper's cottage)
  • Establishment of a water supply for the health centre and the population through the construction of wells and a water tower on the grounds
  • Treatment days by a mobile team before the health centre opens: diseases are diagnosed, children are vaccinated and the most common treatments are given. Malnourished children receive special nutrition and are referred to hospital as needed.
  • Implementation of a nutrition program in accordance with United Nations standards and establishment of a container warehouse to conduct screenings and store food
  • Completion of the main central building as the heart of the health centre.

We are working on:

  • Further equipment for the main building.
  • Other buildings such as staff quarters

This is what the Sign of Hope health centre provides:

  • A nutrition program for malnourished children as well as for pregnant and lactating women
  • Obstetrics and medical care for pregnant women
  • Vaccination program, especially for children
  • Inpatient care for serious illness
  • Outpatient treatment for illness and injury
  • Malaria prevention and treatment
  • Corona prevention and vaccination against Covid-19 for patients and residents of the surrounding area
